Visa information

 

  • A Visa to Rwanda is issued on arrival or from Rwandan Embassies. Optionally you can apply online at the official website of the Directorate General of Imigration&Emigration (DGIE) which is : www. migration.gov.rw  or the Government portal www.irembo.gov.rw

How to apply for a Rwandan VISA?: 

There are three options to apply for a visa:

  • Visa on arrival
  • Visa online
  • Visa through Rwanda Embassy to Switzerland

Who is eligible to obtain a visa on arrival?:  

Citizens of all countries are allowed to get visa upon arrival without prior application.

 How to apply for a visa online?: 

Applicants who wish to apply for a visa online have also the option to pay visa fees online or upon arrival. There is no single affiliated agent that is authorised to apply for visa on your behalf. Such Agents may mislead you and charges more than the required visa fees.

The Online visa fees must not exceed 50 USD for single entry visa.

  • To apply for an ordinary visa online, please visit the official website of the DGIE at :  or Government portal: www.irembo.gov.rw
  • Visitors who wish to visit simultaneously the three countries (Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda) for tourism may apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) online at:  https://irembo.gov.rw/rolportal/web/dgie/east-africa-tourist-visa , upon arrival or directly from our Embassy in Switzerland . If acquiring the EATV visa before travel, your first entry point must be the country through which you applied for the visa.

 How to apply for a Visa through Rwandan Embassy to Switzerland?: 

 To apply for any type of  visa through our Embassy, applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • A passport or any genuine acceptable travel documentvalid 6 months minimum
  • One recent colour passport size picturewith a white background (the photo should be attached to the application form by using only of glue stick. Stapling and clipping the photo to the application form is not accepted)
  • Completed application form  ( see the link for the form bellow ) 
  • Invitation letter(with full contact/ phone number + address  of the inviting person or organization)
  • Valid round trip ticket or itinerary
  • Proof of payment( see the cost of each type of visa below )
  • Visa applications received via post must include a self-addressed stamped envelope for express mail. A registered mail is mandatoryfor the security of your document.

 Who is exempted from visa fees?

Citizen of the following countries do not pay entry visa fees while traveling on ordinary, Service and diplomatic Passports:

  • Citizens of East African Community member States (Burundi, Kenya; Uganda; United Republic of Tanzania and South Sudan)/ they will be issued a pass/Visa to stay for a period of 6 months,
  • Citizen of the following countries do not pay entry fees while traveling on ordinary passports and are to be granted 90 days valid visa: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, cote d’lvoire, Democratic republic of congo, The federation of saint Christopher and Nevis, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Haiti, Mauritius, Philippines, Senegal, Seychelles, Sao Tome and Principe and Singapore,
  • Citizen of the following countries do not pay entry fees while traveling on diplomatic and service/official passports and will be granted 90 days valid visa:   Angola, Benin, People’s republic of China, cote d’lvoire, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, The federation of saint Christopher and Nevis, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, India, Israel, Haiti, Mauritius, Mozambique, Morroco, Nambia, Philipines, Sao Tome and Principle, Senegal, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa,Turkey and the United Arab Emirates,
  • Rwandans living abroad with dual nationality traveling on a foreign passport but in possession of a Rwandan ID are waived with visa free;
  • Foreign residents holding valid residence permit will not be required to pay for entry visa,
  • Children below the age of 16 years old traveling with their parents on a foreign passport in possession of Rwandan ID will not be required for entry visa.

TYPE OF VISA, DURATION, FEES AND PLACE OF ISSUE:

The purpose of your intended travel and other facts will determine what type of visa is required. As a visa applicant, it is important to determine your type of visa among the visa categories provided below:

 I. TRANSIT VISA (VT):  This visa is issued to a foreigner who transits through Rwanda

-Fees: 35 CHF

-Duration: 72 hours

-Place of Issue: Online or at arrival

II. HOLIDAY & TOURISM (V1): This visa is issued to a foreigner who visits Rwanda for holiday, sightseeing, social or recreational or other short-term reasons other than work purposes.  

 *Single entry: 

-Fees: 55 CHF

-Duration: 30 Days

-Place of Issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or DGIE office in Kigali.

Multiple Entry:

-Fees: 75 CHF

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of Issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or at DGIE office in Kigali.

III. FAMILY VISIT (V2):This visa is issued to a foreigner who wishes to visit a family member or a close relative who resides in Rwanda.

Single entry: 

Fees: 55 CHF

Duration: 30 Days

Place of issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or at DGIE office in Kigali.

 *Multiple Entry:

Fees: 75 CHF

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or at DGIE office in Kigali.

IV.  CONFERENCE (V5): This visa is issued to a foreigner who intends to enter Rwanda for conference, meeting, workshop or any other related activity.

Fees: 55 CHF (Single entry)

-Duration: 30 Days

-Place of Issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or at DGIE office in Kigali.

V. EAST AFRICAN VISA (V11): This visa is issued to a foreign tourist who intends to visit countries signatories to the agreement on the establishment of the East Africa Tourist Visa and its revenue sharing or any similar agreement: 

-Fees: 100 CHF (multiple entry)

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of issue: Online; Embassy and/ or   on arrival

-Countries signatories: Rwanda; Kenya and Uganda

VI. GROUP TOURISM (V8): This visa is issued to a foreigner who is travelling as a member of a group of four (4) to ten (10) tourists:

-Fees: 155 CHF (Single entry)

-Duration: 30 Days

-Place of Issue: Online; Embassy and on arrival by showing prior approval issued by DGIE HQ

 -NB: Applicants for this type of visa must enter and leave Rwanda together at the same dates. Otherwise, they will need to apply for another type of visa (e.g. V1).

 VII. DIPLOMAT VISITING RWANDA FOR OFFICIAL
PURPOSES (V3-1): This visa is issued to a foreign diplomat visiting Rwanda for official purposes.

-Fees: Free

-NB: All holders of diplomatic and service/official passport visiting for official visits will be given 30 days valid visa except countries mentioned above to be granted 90 days valid visa.

VIII. DIPLOMAT BASED IN NEIGHBORING 
COUNTRIES BUT WITH JURISDICTION 
FOR COVERING RWANDA (V3-2): This visa is issued to a foreign diplomat accredited to Rwanda who regularly visits for official purposes.  

-Fees: Free

-Duration: 2 years

-Place of issue:  DGIE office in Kigali

IX.JOB SEARCH (V4): This visa is issued to a foreign skilled worker who is seeking employment and whose skills are on the occupations on demand list.

-Fees: 55 CHF (Single entry)

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of issue: Online; Embassy; on arrival or at DGIE office in Kigali.

X.RECIPROCITY ( V12) : This is a Long-term visitor visa is issued on a reciprocal basis to a foreigner who visits Rwanda for visit, conference or any reason other than work purpose.  

-Fees: 160 CHF (multiple entry)

-Duration: Up to 10 years. The holder of this visa is entitled to stay in Rwanda
for a period not exceeding six (6) months renewable upon valid reasons

-Place of issue: DGIE office in Kigali and Rwandan Embassies

-NB: At the beginning, it will be issued to the USA nationals.

XI. BRIDGING (V19): 

-Fees: 35 CHF (Single entry)

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of Issue: DGIE office in Kigali.

XII. INVESTOR (V9): This visa is issued to Board member or Representative of a Multinational Company who does not reside in Rwanda but has significant Business Activities in the Country and needs to regularly visit his or her activities.

-Fees: USD 200 (multiple entry)

-Duration: 2- 10 years

-Place of Issue: DGIE office in Kigali

XIII. MEDICAL TREATMENT (V7): This visa is issued to a foreigner who enters Rwanda for medical treatment or medical consultation confirmed by a recognized medical practitioner. It is also issued to his or her foreign care attendant.

-Fees: 35 CHF (multiple entry)

– Duration: 90 Days

-Place of Issue: Online; on arrival; Embassy and / or DGIE office in Kigali

XIV. PROSPECTIVE INVESTOR (V6): This visa is issued to a foreign prospective investor, entrepreneur or trader who visits Rwanda to explore available business opportunities.

*Single entry: 

-Fees: 55 CHF

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of issue: Embassy and / or DGIE office in Kigali

*Multiple entry: 

-Fees: 75 CHF

-Duration: 90 Days

-Place of issue: Embassy and / or DGIE office in Kigali

XV: REGIONAL ORGANIZATION (EG. COMESA) (VP-2): This visa is issued to a national of a country member of a regional organization or community with free visa other than the East African Community citizens.  

-Fees: Free

-Duration: Agreed upon at Regional level

-Place of Issue: On arrival

XVI. Crew (VC): A crew member of an aircraft or boat at entry point  

-Fees: Free (single entry)

-Duration: 72 Hours

-Place of issue: On arrival

XVII.TRANSIT IN CASE AIRLINE HAS A TECHNICAL ISSUES, OR A PASSENGER FACE ANY OTHER INCONVENIENCES (VE-2):

-Fees: Free (Single entry)

-Duration: 72 Hours

-Place of issue: On arrival

The processing time for a visa is five (5) working days.
